Tips and tricks for budding photographers and
When it comes to creativity, don’t over-think it: spontaneous snapping can often lead to the best photos and videos. But if you’re looking for some extra guidance on how to take the perfect pic, here are three tips to help your entry stand out from the crowd
1. Think about what’s in the frame
If you’re someone who likes taking portraits, avoid simple mistakes like chopping off people’s feet or the tops of their heads. If food is your forte, curate your shot by removing anything that makes your picture look untidy and shoot from above for the most impactful results. More of an action fan? To catch movement without blur, turn on your camera flash. It’ll help you freeze the moment, even if it’s a bright day.
2. See the world differently
Want to capture something beautiful but know that it’s been done before? Think about what will make your version different. An easy win is a change of angle. If everyone’s standing up, consider getting down on the ground or climbing up on a chair. You’re looking for the shot that no one else sees. Think differently and you might just find it.
3. Play around with filters
Try desaturating your images. Some of the most iconic shots are stripped of the distraction of colour. Not sure how to go black and white? Have a play with your device menu. Lots of cameras and smartphones have filters that mean you can adjust the look and feel of your entry before publishing. And if you’re taking a selfie, make sure you take the photo from above and that you’re facing the source of light to avoid over-exposure.
One final thing…
We may want to use your entry again on our Study UK social media feeds, so will be in touch to ask your permission and check your friends are okay for the photo or video to be uploaded onto our wall. The legal basis for processing your information (that is - contacting you through social media), is agreement with the Terms and Conditions of the competition, available to view and download below.
And remember, your submission must comply with the rules of whichever social media platform you’re posting to.
The competition closes on 10 March 2019.
